Vintage photos of the week: The Smithsonian in blue

via The Passion of Former Days

Thomas William Smillie was the first official photographer for the Smithsonian museum, from around 1890-1900. He documented museum activities and exhibits in cyanotypes. His photographs were mostly intended for use as reference but the simple compositions and the deep Prussian blue of the cyanotype, have a striking beauty beyond their original purpose. All photos below came from the Smithsonian Flickr account.
